PROFILE

Rural women often dominate Bharti’s paintings. Role of the women and their bonding with the surrounding has been her constant source of inspiration and vocabulary. Rustic backdrops and earthy tones in her paintings get combined with ethnic emotions, bringing about a subtle rootedness in her expression. Her extensive travel to villages of India creates bonds beyond her practice. This connect keeps her abreast with transformations taking place in the milieu. The endeavour is to resurrect a repertoire of rural sensibilities, some of what is fast moving in oblivion. She peruses compositions myriad in colours, textures, and figures, evoking distinct emotions. Desert Song, Rhythms of Desert, Desert Dream and colours of sand were titles of Bharti’s earlier shows that portrayed the vast landscape of the barren desert and the most colourful and creative people living in this environment. The mesmerising sand-scape with its changing shades provided a perfect backdrop for the people, cattle, mud houses and various earthy elements depicted so often in her work.
Bharti’s colour palette is dominated with earthy tones and rustic colours used effectively in elements in geometric compositions.
Bharti’s paintings intrinsically weave elaborate patterns and designs in textiles, jewellery and the walls paintings. The sensibility of crafts, tradition and texture enlivens span of her canvas.
‘Mother Earth’ were a series of paintings were earthy colours dominated her work. Earthen pots became an obsession for Bharti. The form, colours, textile of the pot combined with its mythological connection gave her immense energy to create these series of paintings. Huge earthen pots of various shapes and sizes dominated most of her work in these series.
Krishna, Kabir and Buddha have had a great influence on her. this connection has evolved into collections of paintings which are her way of offering devotional prayer and an humble tribute to the gods she looks upon and follows.
‘Goddess’ yet another series of paintings consist of very subtle moods of women, these works are most introspective and have more to do with the inner dialogue within a women and her constant conflict with outer self. The colours in this series are more subtle and stark with sepia and shades of black and grey on white background. Minimal elements and fine textures have given the collection an almost charcoal drawing like affect to the oil paintings.
‘One Tribe’ was a collection of paintings about the rich and vibrant folk of India and showcased a series of ethnic community in all their glory, be it unique jewellery, textiles and wall paintings.
Bharti is an alumnus of the National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad. Design helps her impart unique and empathetic perspective to painting.
Devi, the recent series on view is yet another approach to portray the rural woman in all her glory while equating her to eternal female force.
